Much like "A Day in the Life" and "She's Leaving Home", "Mean Mr. Mustard" was taken from a newpaper story about a man who hid his money so no one could make him spend it. The song was also inspired by a bag lady in London who slept in the park and kept her belongings in plastic bags.
